RUI

We continue our efforts in training undergraduate students in Geomicrobiology in Puerto Rico.  After two years of our Research Undergraduate Institution (RUI) initiative, more than 50 students have benefited from the educational and research activities of the program.  They participated in a series of intensive workshops designed to expose them to the different sub disciplines that comprehend the Geomicrobiology science field.  The establishment of the RUI at the University of PR in Humacao (UPR-H) is done in collaboration with the students from the Geology Department of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (UPR-M).

Other Education & Outreach Programs

For Academic Year 2005-06 a total of 14 undergraduate students participated in RUI.  The students are from three campuses of the University of Puerto Rico system: Humacao, Mayagüez and Bayamón and from Turabo University. They had participated in three workshops, one conference and a "sum it up" activity:

- Using simple culture techniques to culture microorganisms from the microbial mats of the Cabo Rojo Salterns.  Offered by Dr. Lilliam Casillas, UPR-Humacao.  November 2005.

- Using molecular techniques for the identification of microbial groups in the microbial mats of the Cabo Rojo Salterns.  Offered by Dr. Carlos Ríos, UPR-Mayagüez.  January 2006.

- Characterization of minerals in organo-sedimentary layers, their sources and genesis.  Offered by Dr. Wilson Ramírez, UPR-Mayagüez.  April 2006.

- What is it that we need to know and how do we measure it? In situ geochemical assessment of geomicrobiological processes in Cabo Rojo.  Offered by Dr. Pieter Visscher, UConn, with assistance from Zamara Fuentes.  April 2006.

- "Sum it up" activity. How to perform a geomicrobiological investigation in Cabo Rojo salterns: Putting it all together.  Guided by Dr. Pieter Visscher.  May 2006.
